There are a number of UNSW study programs majoring in oceanography and climate science available through either the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences (BEES) or the School of Mathematics & Statistics.

These courses include study of subjects such as mathematics, physics, fluid dynamics, atmosphere-ocean dynamics and physical oceanography.

This four year program is designed for students with a strong science background who are interested in an in depth study of the earth's climate system. Students learn about the ocean, land and atmospheric processes which drive the planet's climate and how human action affects these processes, leading to changes in local and global climates.

The Climate Systems Science major under the Bachelor of Science degree is a three year program designed for students with a science background who want to study of the earth's climate system. Climate science can be studied as a major (Climate Systems Science) or can be integrated into a range of programs as a minor.

The Climate Systems Science stream is focused on a broad introduction to the science of the Earth's climate system.

Students will gain an understanding of the fundamentals of atmospheric science, oceanography and chemistry and have the option of focusing their studies in areas such as climate and vegetation, hydrology, biology, biogeochemistry or environmental and resource management.

Courses are designed to highlight the interrelated nature of climate system components and give students the ability to critically analyse problems in multi-disciplinary science context. Students will also develop an ability to undertake directed research.

Honours information

Entry into climate science honours projects is achieved through the through the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences. A climate science honours project may also be carried out through the School of Mathematics & Statistics. If your program doesn't allow enrolment in this stream, you may still be able to work out arrangements for having your project supervised by a member of CCRC.
