Staff training

Visit our Sharepoint site to access the mandatory training modules for all UNSW staff. You will also find modules specifically for UNSW supervisors, Emergency Control Organisation (ECO) training and Lab Based training.

Student training

To ensure the safety of all students participating in various activities at UNSW, it is mandatory to complete specific training courses. This training is designed to help you stay safe and return home without incident each day.

If you are an Honours Student, Postgraduate Student (Masters, PhD), or have been instructed to complete this training, please find the relevant links below. This requirement may be due to special access granted to you or because the activity or event you are involved in necessitates this training.

    Lab Health and Safety

    • All Honours and postgraduate students working within labs or workshops.
    • Any UG student who is directed to complete (e.g. UG student lab user).

    SAFETYLABS

    • Laboratory Safety Awareness HSELAB

    This course covers basic lab safety at UNSW.

    • Participate in safe laboratory conduct
    • Select and use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
    • Identify, assess and control risks for plant, equipment and chemicals
    • Develop good housekeeping practices
    • Access safety literature (e.g. Australian Standards)

Specific Training

These courses are conducted at the request of your supervisor or the supervisor/manager of the area where you are engaged in activities. They provide training on specific tasks or activities within the laboratory/workshop/area you are working.

    This course covers risks and hazards when working with chemicals.

    • Identify general risks and hazards when working with chemicals,
    • Respond to chemical spills,
    • Refer to the SDS to avoid unexpected and violent chemical reactions,
    • Safely transport chemicals from stores to the lab, and
    • Use the appropriate tools to safely store chemicals once they're in the lab.

FAQs

1. Do I have to complete the safety training before being allowed access into laboratories?

All staff and students must complete online health and safety training within a reasonable timeframe. These courses provide essential information for safe work practices at UNSW.

Local areas are responsible for conducting thorough inductions, including training on:

  • Local area hazards and procedures.
  • Salus for creating Safe Work Procedures (SWPs) and Risk Management Forms (RMFs)
  • Appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for specific tasks
  • Lab techniques and equipment use to ensure competency and safe laboratory access.

2. I'm both a student and a staff member how do I enrol in training?

If you have a staff profile at UNSW then you should use this to self-enrol in training courses through PiMS. Instructions for this can be found at the staff learning and development SharePoint site :{insert link button}Â
