Strategic litigation can be a powerful tool for social change and progressive law reform that enhances protections for refugees. Refugee litigation involves a broad range of complicated intersecting legal issues.  Academic experts can play a valuable role partnering with practitioners to develop the best arguments to successfully challenge problematic laws in the courts.

Two Kaldor Centre workshops and a nationwide survey strongly endorsed the need for a mechanism to support collaborations between legal practitioners and academics in the conduct of refugee litigation. In response, the Kaldor Centre created a Strategic Litigation Network.

The Strategic Litigation Network connects legal practitioners conducting refugee litigation to academics with specialised expertise relevant to the case, in the interests of supporting more robust legal strategies and arguments before the court. It supports the sharing of practice-relevant scholarly legal analysis in key areas where court challenges may be afoot.
