Artist statement
Dolya Nedolya (fate and not fate) is a mixed media painting that uses acrylic and charcoal to portray the Slavic celestials of fate. Inspired by folkloric art traditions the artist primarily worked with wet on wet techniques, repetition and symmetry to create the work. The hand drafted symmetry unites the celestials as they preside over the threads of fate, yet also aids in segregating their polarising roles in the Slavic Pantheon. The work acts to sustain and preserve a visual culture for a religion that has been predominantly erased and lost to time.
