The Master of Engineering Science/Master of Commerce double degree allows you to graduate with two postgraduate qualifications. This degree is ideal for you if you're an early or mid-career professional seeking to advance your career.

In this dual master's program, you’ll study discipline specific courses unique to Engineering or Commerce as well as building skills essential to professional decision making, project and staff management, leadership and strategy.

The Master of Engineering Science is designed for engineers and graduates wishing to develop and expand their knowledge and skills in their current area of expertise. Studying a Master of Engineering Science enables you to meet or maintain professional accreditation standards and provides opportunities for continuing professional development.

The Master of Commerce is innovative, industry-relevant and incorporates the latest thinking in business. If you're a non-business graduate wanting to develop your skills and knowledge in business, or a business graduate who would like to broaden your business knowledge, this program allows you to choose from a range of disciplines to reach your career goals.Ìý

You can graduate with two master's after three years of study, however, students with advanced standing will be able to complete their studies up to a year and a half sooner.

Recognition of prior learning

You may be eligible for up to 72 Units of Credit depending on your background:

For the Commerce component, up to 24 Units of Credit may be awarded based on your previous Business studies (at Bachelor level or higher).

For the Engineering Science component, between 24 and 48 Units of Credit may be awarded:

  • If you have a four year engineering degree that includes a final year capstone design or research project and a project management course you will be given 24 Units of Credit
  • If you have a four year engineering degree that includes a final year capstone design or research project and a project management course, AND at least 3 years of professional engineering work experience you will be given 24 Units of Credit
  • If you have an Australian 4-year Engineering Degree or an equivalent degree accredited under the Washington Accord you will be given 48 Units of Credit
  • Recognition of Prior Learning may be obtained for other courses upon application.

You’ll be notified of the credits in your official letter of offer. The amount of credit awarded will reduce your overall degree duration by up to one and a half years.

In the Master of Engineering Science component of this program, you will choose from nine specialisation options, within your chosen specialisation you will study a combination of:

  • Disciplinary courses
  • Advanced disciplinary courses
  • Engineering and technical management courses
  • Enquiry-based courses (which includes a research project)
  • Elective courses (across Disciplinary, Advanced Disciplinary and Engineering and Technical Management courses)

Through the Disciplinary and Advanced Disciplinary Knowledge courses you’ll learn the technical knowledge and skills you need for your chosen specialisation. You’ll also update your knowledge in cutting-edge developments in your area of interest.

Engineering and Technical Management courses help you build skills in communicating and justifying professional decisions, employing ethical approaches to practice, and developing the abilities required for roles more focused on project and or staff management, leadership and strategy.

To complement this in the Master of Commerce component of this program you’ll specialise in one of 16 areas to develop your skills and knowledge in business, in addition you’ll study:

  • Core courses on professional skills and data analytics
  • Gateway courses that support your specialisation
  • Courses in your chosen specialisation
  • A UNSW Business School elective course
  • A Capstone or Practicum course
