Associate Professor Usman is an accomplished professional holding a Doctor of Pharmacy, an MBA in Healthcare Management, a Graduate Certificate in Health Information Technology, and a PhD in Health Informatics. He brings a wealth of academic and industry experience, having served as an Associate Professor and Digital Health Consultant at Taipei Medical University. Currently, he holds positions as a Senior Clinical Data Consultant with the Tasmanian State Government's Department of Health and as an Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia.
His research is dedicated to pioneering innovative approaches in Health Information Technology with the goal of enhancing Quality of Care and Patient Safety, Artificial Intelligence in Medicine, Telemedicine, Electronic Health Records, Internet of Things (IoTs), Telemedicine, Virtual Care models, Global Health Informatics, and Health Services Research. Usman's dedication to the field is evident through his numerous fellowships, including being elected a fellow of The International Academy of Health Sciences Informatics (IAHSI) and serving as a founding fellow of the Australasian Institute of Digital Health (FAIDH). He also holds affiliations with The International Society for Quality in Health Care (ISQua) and the Australasian College of Health Service Management (ACHSM).
As a co-founder of Taiwan's Observational Health Data Science and Informatics (OHDSI) chapter, he actively fosters collaboration in Global Health Informatics. Usman has also been involved in joint collaborative courses and Digital Health projects with MIT, Harvard University, and Taipei Medical University. Several of his research projects have garnered media attention, being featured over 100 times, including in print media articles, news channel videos, and interviews throughout his professional journey. His influence extends to the development and advancement of Digital Health start-ups, such as Artificial Intelligence Based Enhanced Safety of Prescriptions (AESOP)Ìýand DermAI. Notably, AESOP was recognized as a top 10 team at B2MC Taiwan 2019.
Usman has held influential roles in various boards and working groups, including the IMIA Telehealth, Digital Health & Interoperability, National Health Data Collaboration, and the Clinical Genomics Network. He has also held editorial positions for international journals, serving as co-Editor-in-Chief of Computer Methods and Programs in Biomedicine-Update and editorships at journals like the International Journal for Quality in Health Care and BMJ Health and Care Informatics. His extensive experience includes collaboration with organizations such as the International Safety and Quality in Healthcare, the International Medical Informatics Association, the International Academy of Health Sciences Informatics, the Asia Pacific Association of Medical Informatics, the World Health Organization, the Institute of Healthcare Improvement, the Taiwan Joint Commission Accreditation, and others.
He is a successful recipient of 15 research grants total approx. 3 million AUD, and he has mentored post-doctoral researchers and postgraduate students, successfully guiding the graduation of five master's students. His scholarly contributions include over 170 research publications in prestigious international journals, spanning editorials, authored book chapters, conference abstracts, and conference papers. Usman has also made significant contributions through invited talks, session chairs, and participation in various academic and industry events, including Hackathons and Datathons, both nationally and internationally.
