As a behavioural scientist, I explore various aspects that influence safety, aspects of human factors, human performance and human-machine interaction. My specific area of expertise is in developing training interventions to improve operators' behaviour and non-technical skills (i.e., risk management, situation awareness, etc.).
Through my research, I aim to address the issue of risk management of young novice operators, behavioural improvement, and training methods to facilitate behavioural changes. Sustainable and efficient training programs will benefit young operators in improving their behaviour, reducing a number of errors associated with their behaviour, and ultimately improve safety. My most significant research contribution relate to road safety via impact on the industry, rules and regulations, in relation to speed management and young driver training. In the areas of aviation and human factors, I have informed industry about the non-technical skills that are important in the process of forming pilots' professional competency. In addition, my research examines the effect of AI in training, defence, ethics and its role in decision-making of operators. Importantly, I conduct the research on the topics of Ukraine (i.e., UAV, aviation, safety and security).
I lead the Human Factors Research Group, a team of Aviation staff, as well as research and professional staff. I supervise PhD and Honours students. In addition, I lead a number of faculty initiatives to build capacity and presence of research in the school. Outside my University role, my duties extend to the Chair-Elect at the Training Technical Group at the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, and the Director of Education and Board Member of Women in Aviation Australian Chapter.
Prior to beginning the position at UNSW Canberra, I held positions with the School of Aviation (UNSW), and overseas. Specifically, I worked at the University of Nottingham (UK), and in the National Technical University of Ukraine, and the Flight Academy of National Aviation University (Ukraine). I have also worked in the industry as a Human Factors Specialist working on a number of projects in transport safety, and as PPL/CPL/ATPL Instructor.
