Grant Stevens, Deputy Head of School (Art) at UNSW Art & Design, is an artist and academic with expertise in contemporary art practice and theory. His teaching, research and practice focus on the relationships between photography,moving image, and digital media.

Stevens’ artworks have been exhibited widely, including at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the Queensland Art Gallery/Gallery of Modern Art, the National Gallery of Victoria, the Museum of Contemporary Art (Sydney), the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (Melbourne), the Institute of Modern Art (Brisbane) as well as in galleries and museums nationally and internationally. His works have received numerous awards, grants and prizes, and he has undertaken residencies in Los Angeles, Shenzhen, Bundanon, and Sydney. He is represented by Sullivan + Strumpf, Sydney, and Starkwhite, Auckland.

Stevens completed his PhD in 2007 at the Queensland University of Technology. His research continues to examine the relationships between contemporary art, technology, and visual culture. Stevens has published on recent impulses in contemporary moving image art, as well as the impacts of digital culture on teaching and learning. His current research examines responses in contemporary art to the attention economy and the neoliberal constructs of wellness and wellbeing.

Stevens has experience teaching across theory and practice, with a particular emphasis on photography and moving image art. He has supervised PhD and MFA candidates across a diverse range of domains, including fine arts, media arts, fashion, and art theory.
