Mr Andre Goios Borges De Almeida
I am a researcher in musical and voice acoustics and a previous lecturer in Acoustics. I study the physics of sound production in wind instruments and in the voice. Under the supervision of Joe Wolfe, and in collaboration with Noel Hanna and John Smith, I devise non-intrusive experiments that allow to characterise the mechanical behaviour of the vocal folds. Given my experience in musical acoustics, I relate these results with similar ones studying the operation of the lips and the reeds in wind instruments such as the trombone, the clarinet or the oboe.
Previously, in the same team I was particularly interested on the behaviour of reeds and lips when control parameters are changed rather than being kept constant. These parameters can be the blowing pressure or the tension of the lips. One particular aspect with important results was our study on the start of oscillations when starting a new note from silence.
