Associate Professor Alex Sen Gupta
I am a research scientist and lecturer at the Climate Change Research Centre () and the Centre For Marine Science and Innovation () at the university of New South Wales (). Im also a Chief Investigator/program leader for the ARC Australian Centre of Excellence for Antarctic Science () and an Associate Investigator for the ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate Extremes ()Ìý
My work revolves around the role of the ocean in the climate system, how the ocean influences regional climate and what global climate models tell us about the future of the ocean. Recently I been focussing on Marine Heatwaves: what causes them, how they are changing over time, and how they impact marine organisms. I have also been using climate models to understand changes to ocean circulation in a warming world.
I have a wide range of interests including:
- Marine Heatwaves
- Factors affecting high latitude Southern Hemisphere atmospheric circulation
- The impacts of climate variability on regional rainfall
- Modelling the movement of tropical tuna
- Climate model biases
- How temperature variability affect marine species
I also developed Carbonator a simple climate model for schools, the general public and researchers. You can use Carbonator to understand how our actions affect global warming, sea level rise and ocean acidification.
