Doctor of Philosophy 

The Doctoral degree programs within the School of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences provide the highest level of training in key areas of scientific research. Students work on an independent research project encompassing the broader interests of one of the research teams within the School.

In the early stages of the program, students receive close supervision and guidance in the management of their project. In the later stages, however, students are encouraged to exercise initiative and demonstrate originality. In the last year of the program, the candidate should be able to work independently and be guided rather than directed by the supervisor.

Masters by Research
A Masters by Research (MRes) requires completion of an original piece of research that, given the timeframe, is more limited in scope and nature than that required for a PhD.
Master of Philosophy
A Master of Philosophy (MPhil) combines a thesis comprising an original piece of research that is at least 66% of the degree, and compulsory coursework including research training that is relevant to the field of study.
