In the debut episode, Professor Logue sits down with Derek Walker, , to discuss the Well-being of Future Generations Act—a groundbreaking law that positions Wales as a global leader in long-term thinking and sustainability.

Walker explains, “Governments around the world are notoriously bad at acting for the long term...We wanted to do something about that.”

Since the Act’s introduction nearly a decade ago, Wales has seen policy shifts in areas like public transport, recycling, and sustainable energy use, all with a focus on creating a fairer and more resilient future.

Reflecting on how these concepts might apply in Australia, Walker offers insight into why long-term thinking is crucial for achieving intergenerational equity.

“What we’re doing in Wales is a practical example—it shows that with the right structures, you can support decision-making that benefits generations to come. Australia has the potential to lead in this space, and it would be fantastic to see a similar commitment to future generations here,” says Walker. With a parliamentary now created, there is increased focussed on how we can achieve a fair go for future generations in Australia.
