Recently, an on-site Vision 2020 Australia eye health screening day was conducted for NSW parliamentarians and staff, led by a dedicated team of optometry students under the supervision and guidance of Amir Hali, Lecturer and Optometrist from UNSW School of Optometry & Vision Science. The initiative involved final year students Gada Harmouch and Bianca Stevenson, along with Catherine Bui and Lara Chwa from fourth year.Â
Vision 2020 Australia is the peak body for vision and eye health in Australia and the UNSW School of Optometry and Vision Science is a member organisation. Vision 2020 Australia sponsored this event at NSW Parliament House in advance of World Sight Day on 10th October. Guide Dogs NSW/ACT brought along four gorgeous Labrador puppies, who are guide dogs in training.
The screening process was comprehensive, starting with preliminary examinations such as history taking, vision assessments, and intraocular pressure checks. This was followed by advanced retinal imaging and OCT scans using Zeiss technology.
As a result of these findings, several referrals were made for further investigation by optometrists or general practitioners, ensuring that individuals received the necessary follow-up care. Each participant was provided with a detailed report or referral based on their screening results.
Reflecting on the initiative, the team expressed their satisfaction in being able to reach out to parliamentarians who, despite their busy schedules, need to prioritise their eye and general health. Mr Hali noted, “Our on-site screening found issues that warranted further follow-up, whether it was a blood pressure check with their GP or a full eye examination with an optometrist.â€
Tim James MP was an enthusiastic participant on the day and is co-chair of the NSW Parliamentarian Friends of Eye Health established in 2023, together with Michael Holland MP.Â
Mr Hali reinforced the key message of World Sight Day #loveyoureyes “This initiative underscores the critical role of regular eye examinations, and the significant impact of optometry can make in maintaining both ocular and overall health.â€
