Following a successful showing of Tan Lijie’s work in Australia last year, this exhibition will make its way to Taiwan in 2024.
The work of celebrated Chinese contemporary artist Tan Lijie is set to captivate audiences internationally with a stunning curation of works. The exhibition, titled ‘Rain on the Platform—Tan Lijie, Selected Works’, co-curated by Judith Neilson Chair of Contemporary Art Professor Paul Gladston and Dr. Lynne Howarth-Gladston, will be featured at the National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan from 6 May to 7 June.
The exhibition showcases videos, photographs, and assemblages by the Chinese contemporary artist Tan Lijie. In these works, Tan represents imagined coexistence between lived realities, enchanted realms, reveries, and dreamscapes.
Tan lives and works in her home city of Shenzhen at the border between mainland China and Hong Kong – an interstitial space resonant with the indeterminate aesthetics of the artist’s work. The multidimensionality of Tan’s work gives rise to subtly transporting atmospheres and aesthetic affects that suspend fixed perceptions of the real and an orderly sense of time and space.
Informing Tan Lijie’s work are personal concerns about the devastating environmental impact and controlling expectations of today’s materially obsessed societies. The work is also marked by residual traces of traditional Chinese Confucian-literati culture and its aspirations toward a harmonious, mutually sustaining, aesthetic reciprocity between humanity, nature, and the heavenly.
“We are thrilled to bring this exhibition to the National Cheng Kung University in 2024,” says Prof. Gladston. “Tan’s artistry exemplifies the richness and dynamism of contemporary Chinese art that will resonate deeply with audiences in Taiwan.”
The public opening event will feature a conversation with artist Tan Lijie and promises to be a vibrant and immersive artistic experience with complimentary food, drinks and networking.
