Research:Â Modern cells rely on complex internal metabolic pathways to yield the nutrients needed for cell growth and division. It is not well understood how primitive cells accessed these nutrients, prior to the evolution of these metabolic pathways. By studying the membrane properties of model primitive and artificial cells, I am investigating how primitive cells may have accessed the required nutrients from an external source.
