Jane is an artist and designer with a love of sculpture and drawing. Her current research combines drawing techniques with large-scale photographic collage to explore methods of embodiment of more-than-human sensory capabilities. With support from the 3DXLab, her PhD project explores ant senses, drawing upon recent research which has revealed extraordinary richness in visual capacity and complex navigational ability of some Australian ant species. Informed by posthuman feminist perspectives and using a phenomenological framework, Jane’s work adopts the ant’s lens to explore nonhuman lived experience, perspective, and scale. This research seeks to generate fresh insights into embodied visual methods for challenging dominant Western dualistic interpretations of the more-than-human world. Jane is conducting fieldwork in NSW on the traditional lands of the Darug (greater Blue Mountains), Gumbaynggir (Bongil Bongil National Park) and Gamaraygal (north side of Port Jackson) people.
Jane’s professional background is in publication design and illustration, and she still designs and illustrates books whenever possible.
Over the past 10 years Jane has also taught at tertiary level in art and design history and theory, data visualisation, typography and drawing techniques. Jane is a sessional academic at UNSW Art & Design and recently taught Design History and Theory within the Masters of Design.
