Abstract
Nearly 1/3rd of the global population has myopia, and it is estimated to affect every one of two people by year 2050. Excessive near work is the one of the major risk factors for myopia. The modern education system involves a lot of near work- reading, writing, arithmetic that are increasingly screen based. Visual tasks at close range are believed to engage the near triad, i.e., an increase in accommodation, convergence, and pupil constriction. Although near work and accommodative response are considered to reduce pupil size, cognitive demand (e.g., numerical calculations) may increase the pupil size. Furthermore, an increased pupil size may occur in poor light conditions. Such changes may disrupt the interplay between pupil size, crystalline lens response and the image and may play a role in development of refractive error of the eye. However, there is little understanding of the role of the pupil, it’s interaction with accommodation and relation, if any with onset and progression of myopia. My project aims to shed light on this important area and will improve our understanding of myopia and possibly help develop potential intervention pathways.
Biography
Geetha received her Bachelor of Science in Optometry from Bausch & Lomb School of Optometry, India. She had been associated with LVPEI for six years in the capacity of a Research Optometrist at the Visual Optics Laboratory and as a consultant optometrist with the Cornea and Anterior Segment services. Her research was on: Ocular focusing behaviour of the monocular children, and three-dimensional biometry and optical properties of the human crystalline lenses. In addition to the research, Geetha was also involved in teaching and mentoring undergraduate optometry students at Bausch & Lomb School of Optometry for academic research projects.Â
