As I progressed in my career in Medicine and have increasingly taken on clinical leadership and managerial duties, I have become aware of my lack of knowledge and experience as a clinician-manager. I realised that gaining an academic qualification in that field would be extremely valuable, providing tangible benefits to my patients, colleagues, the organisation I work for and for my own personal and professional development. The School of Public Health and Community Medicine at UNSW Sydney has a world-wide reputation for a high quality Masters of Health Management program which can be undertaken as an external student, making it an ideal course and institution to undertake my further studies.

Most important thing learned

The most important thing that I have learned in my MHM studies was that successful leadership of others begins with self-awareness.  Conscious reflection on own performance, leadership and management styles ultimately leads to improvements in global organisational performance and patient outcomes. 

Most challenging thing

The most challenging thing about my studies was maintaining a balance between my academic studies, professional duties and personal life. No one aspect is more important than the other and a healthy balance must be maintained for continued success in all areas of life. 

Enjoyed the most

The most enjoyable thing about undertaking further postgraduate studies was gaining knowledge and new skills in previously completely foreign disciplines, for example financial management.

Message to newly commencing students

First and foremost enjoy acquiring new knowledge and finding practical applications for your new skills. Everything you are learning has the potential to profoundly impact your life and the lives of those around you.

How degree will assist in your career

My degree has already proven immensely useful in my day-to-day managerial duties. It has provided me with essential skills to be a caring and inspiring leader, and an effective and responsible manager. The degree has laid a strong foundation for my ongoing personal and professional development, which will ultimately contribute to safer and better care of my patients.
