Please note that it is not possible to fit some Commerce majors and the Quantitative Risk major into the minimum time for the degree without overloading: see below. As the UNSW Business School is the Program Authority, check with them that your selection of courses will satisfy the program requirements -- this is especially relevant for Quantitative Risk as there can be considerable overlap in some choice of majors. Â
All the courses in the School of Mathematics and Statistics must be taken at the Higher level where that is available.Â
Students must maintain a WAM of at least 70 to stay in the Advanced Mathematics degree, otherwise, students will be transferred to program 3970 (BSc), 3502 (BCom) or 3529 (BCom/BSc).Â
Students must complete all of stages 1, 2 and 3 in one of the mathematics plans listed before commencing honours in mathematics.Â

Detailed plans
For Actuarial Studies majors
NOTE: From 2013 Actuarial Studies can only be taken as part of the Bachelor of Actuarial Studies, which can be combined with advanced maths as . A suggested study plan is available as a pdf file. The rest of this section applies only to students who began their degree before 2013.Â
By agreement with the School of Actuarial Studies, the pre-requisites for the compulsory course ACTL3003 or ACTL3162 are MATH2881 and MATH3901 in the Quantitative Risk major only. Contact the Student Services Manager or the Director of Undergraduate Studies to organise enrolment in ACTL3003 or ACTL3162. Â
Suggested plans are available (PDF).Â
FINS2624 and FINS3636 are highly recommended Commerce courses for Actuarial majors.Â
Exemptions from Part II IAA subjects:Â
Students should note that The Institute of Actuaries of Australia requires that students have normally completed all the Part I courses before enrolling in the Part II courses.Â
The UNSW Part II courses ACTL4001 and ACTL4002 may be completed in the 4th year as either commerce or free electives, provided the students satisfy the entry requirements.Â
Enrolment in the Part II equivalent courses is subject to approval from the Head of Actuarial Studies.Â
Students enrolled in the combined degree program should meet the following requirements to be permitted to enrol in the Part II equivalent courses:Â
- Completed most of the Part I equivalent courses and obtained exemption and be completing at most the final 2 of the Part I courses at the same time.Â
- Have an average mark of at least 70% in the ACTL courses completed to date and have at least three months' work experience in a financial services company, preferably in an actuarial graduate role by the time the student commences the course.Â
Students who do not meet these criteria may apply to the Head of Actuarial Studies for admission to the Part II equivalent courses setting out the reasons for waiving the entry requirements. Applications will be considered based on work experience and academic performance.Â
Students who are not able to complete the Part II courses will need to take other electives instead (FINS2624 and FINS3636 are recommended).Â
For Finance majorsÂ
Suggested plans are available (PDF). When doing Finance and Quantitative Risk, check with the Business School to confirm you have completed all requirements.Â
Other Commerce majorsÂ
Please note that Quantitative Risk with other commerce majors will allow for electives if the commerce major contains two courses in the commerce core (e.g., Accounting). Students are encouraged to take these electives as further science courses. Â
Suggested plans are available (PDF): again, confirm with the ASB that all requirements are satisfied when doing Quantitative Risk.Â
