If you wish to study mathematics and economics, there are four different possibilities:

  • Take a combined degree BEc/BSc (Adv Maths) () with an Applied Mathematics, Pure Mathematics or Advanced Statistics major in the BSc component;
  • Take a Mathematics or Statistics major as a second major in a BEc degree (only for 2016 or earlier enrolments);
  • Take a combined degree BEc/BSc with a Mathematics, Statistics or Physical Oceanography major in the BSc component;
  • Take a combined degree BEc/BSc (Adv Sci) with a Mathematics, Statistics or Advanced Physical Oceanography major in the BSc component.

Program 3543 is a three-year degree, with the possible option of continuing to the Honours Economics degree (). Program 3563 is a four-year degree, with the possible options of continuing to either (or both) the or programs. Programs 3566 and 3564 are five-year degrees which include Honours in the Science component and may be continued to the Honours Economics program. Each (additional) Honours program takes an additional year of study.

  • The (post 2016) Economics component is 96 uoc and consists of:

    • ECON1403 Economics Perspectives (enrolment on completion of ECON1101);
    • At least one of  ACCT1501,FINS1613, INFS1602, MARK1012, MGMT1001, or TABL1710;
    • Two compulsory first year Mathematics courses (12uoc), as required by the Science major (see below);
    • A major in either Economics, Econometrics or Financial Economics totalling 60uoc, including 36uoc from the compulsory courses;
    • 12uoc of further Economics electives;
    • 12uoc of further UNSW Business School electives.

    In combined degrees with a BSc, the first year Mathematics courses may either be counted as part of the BEc or BSc, and then two further electives need to be taken in the opposite faculty.

  • To complete a double major with a Maths or Stats major in the old BEc () you must do:

    • All the requirements of a BEc (which was 84uoc in 2016 and earlier, see the 2016 handbook);
    • One of MATH1131 or MATH1141 and one of MATH1231 or MATH1241;
    • MATH2011, MATH2801, MATH2501 or higher equivalents;
    • For a Maths major MATH2521, MATH2121 or higher equivalent, 12uoc of non-Stats Level III Maths and a further 6uoc of any Level III Maths;
    • For a Stats major MATH2831, MATH3801, MATH3811, MATH3821 (or higher equivalents) and one further Level III Stats course;
    • 12uoc General Education;
    • Free electives as necessary to make 144uoc in total.
  • The Science component in program 3563 consists of

    It is also possible to do a Double Major in Mathematics and Statistics (84uoc) in this degree.

  • The Advanced Science component in program 3566 consists of:

    • A mathematics (60uoc), statistics (60uoc) or Advanced Physical Oceanography (90uoc) major;
    • SCIF1121 or SCIF1131;
    • Further first year Science courses to total 24uoc Level I Science if necessary;
    • Additional level III Science to make a total of at least 30uoc of level III Science if necessary;
    • Further Science courses to a total of 96uoc of Science before commencement of Honours;
    • 48uoc of Science Honours.

    The Mathematics and Statistics majors in this plan are the same as for plan 3563, except that students are required to do the higher level courses where available.

    It is also possible to do a double major in Mathematics and Statistics (84uoc) in this degree.

  • The Advanced Mathematics component in program 3564 consists of:

Suggested study plans

A suggested study plan for program 3564 (Advanced Maths/BEc, includes Advanced Oceanography) is available.

For Maths/BEc in program 3563 or 3566, follow Applied Maths/BEc in program 3564, but replace SCIF1121 and COMP1911 with two first year Science electives, MATH1081 becomes recommended (you can replace it with a 6uoc Science course), replace MATH2301 and two of the MATH3xxx courses with Science electives. The remaining MATH3xxx courses must then include at least two non-Statistics courses. You do not need to take the higher level MATH courses in program 3563.

For Stats/BEc in program 3563 or 3566 follow advanced Stats/BEc in program 3564, but replace SCIF1121 and COMP1911 with two first year Science electives, MATH1081 becomes recommended (you can replace it with a 6uoc Science course), replace MATH2621, MATH2221 and the MATH3xxx courses with Science electives. You do not need to take the higher level MATH courses in program 3563.

For Oceanography/BEc in program 3563, follow Advanced Oceanography/BEc but replace SCIF1121, MATH2901, MSCI3001 and MATH3101 with Science electives, PHYS2801 becomes recommended (you can replace it with a 6uoc Science course). You do not need to take the higher level MATH courses in program 3563.
