What we do

Our research involves the development and application of novel materials characterisation methods using large-scale synchrotron x-ray and neutron scattering facilities for the investigation of electro-mechanical response in materials.  We collaborate with multiple research and industry partners both nationally and globally in the creation of new measurement instrumentation as well as the development of electro-mechanical materials for wide ranging real-world applications.

We carry out experiments in labs within UNSW Sydney as well as facilities in Australia, such as the Australian Synchrotron in Melbourne and the OPAL research reactor in Sydney.  However, the methods we develop and apply are often only accessible at larger international facilities, such as the European Synchrotron in France, the Advanced Photon Source in the USA, or the JPARC spallation neutron source in Japan.

Examples of our latest research can be found on the

Projects

We are always recruiting students for PhD and Masters by Research projects.  If you have an interest in characterisation and observing material structures no one has seen before or using materials characterisation for developing novel and new electro-mechanical materials for industry, then we can develop a project together to suit your background.  The group is open to applicants with Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering or Computer Science backgrounds with project tailorable to personal interests and prior experience.

Group Life and Alumni

Our group collaborates extensively throughout the world, with many opportunities to travel for experiments, internships, conferences and collaborative group visits.  This exposes group members to a global set of job opportunities after graduation.  Below are some recent graduates and where they are now.
