Synopsis

The tropical oceans have warmed since the mid-20th century in response to increased greenhouse gases, with the Atlantic and Indian Oceans warming faster than the tropical Pacific. In the early 21-st century, the tropical Pacific temperatures cooled, possibly moderating the impacts of global warming. The influence of the cooled tropical Pacific in the early 21st century on global climate needs to be explored.

Aims

This study aims at understanding whether the recent Pacific cooling has influenced other ocean basins and impacted climate in the tropics and remote regions.

Student benefits

The candidate will learn about the temperature trends in historical period and how oceans can affect regional climate. The candidate will gain experience in working with large data, conducting data analysis and visualization, and experience with programming.
