Synopsis
Marine heatwaves can have important negative impacts on marine species, with knock on effects for important fisheries and aquaculture. As the planet warms they are becoming more frequent with higher intensity, making their impacts more damaging. However most work to date has focused on the the surface signature of these extreme events.
In this project we will use a combination of subsurface observations, ocean reanalysis and ocean model experiments to understand the subsurface evolution of marine heatwaves. In particular we will examine if subsurface conditions make marine heatwaves more likely.
