Fuelling health innovation.
Introduction from CVMM Theme LeadÂ
The Cardiac, Vascular, and Metabolic Medicine (CVMM) theme, established in 2020 within the Faculty of Health & Medicine, has quickly become a hub for scientific expertise and leadership, evolving from the original Non-Communicable Diseases theme.
Since its inception, the CVMM theme has achieved significant milestones, including the launch of the annual CVMM Symposium, the introduction of the Theme Grant Scheme for collaborative research, the establishment of the Early Career Researcher Committee, and active promotion of collaboration across themes, schools, and institutes.
Guided by a Steering Committee of senior researchers and clinicians from UNSW and its Affiliates, we foster a robust CVMM community. We have created a central hub, sharing resources and encouraging collaboration, breaking down silos among researchers and clinicians, especially early to mid-career researchers. This builds cross-disciplinary connections, amplifying the impact of our cardiovascular and metabolic medicine research on the Australian community, and beyond.
We welcome new ideas and collaborations to strengthen and grow the CVMM community. Please contact the CVMM Research Development Manager Stella Jun (stella.jun@unsw.edu.au) for any questions, or if you would like to be added to our mailing list.
Thank you,
Professor Alta Schutte

We facilitate and lead the rapid development of major new research initiatives that tackle heart disease, stroke, vascular disease, diabetes and kidney disease in multiple research arenas. Our areas of focus include primary health care, population health, intensive and critical care, big data in health and clinical trials. Our research underpins targeted preventions and therapeutic interventions, so all Australians can access a better quality of life.Ìý

Our academics and colleagues have a long-standing record of excellence in basic science research through to the translation and application of findings – from the bench, through to populations and across to the bedside. We improve outcomes for all, working within patient communities and addressing key disease risk factors such as raised blood pressure or hypertension, diet, exercise, planetary health, green space and pollution.ÌýÂ
Professor Alta Schutte, Principal Lead for the UNSW Medicine & Health CVMM research theme, discusses hypertension control rates in Australia with Professor Markus Schlaich. Why is it important to strive for better control of high blood pressure in a population and how can this be achieved?Â
