Welcome from the Head of School

Biomedical Engineering is focused on the development and application of engineering concepts and methods to provide new solutions to biological, medical and healthcare problems. Similarly, the vision of the UNSW Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering is to provide the best research and teaching outcomes relevant to the development of applications in the human healthcare sector. Together, our academics and students help in the diagnosis, treatment and quality of life for Australians with life-threatening or debilitating diseases and conditions.

It’s an exciting time to be involved in this field. Every day there are reports of new health technologies and improvements in health and wellness due to improved diagnostics and therapies. A career in Biomedical Engineering is the path to take to be part of this multi-disciplinary effort. We’re the first such school in Australia and indeed Southeast Asia, having recently celebrated our 40th anniversary. So, come and join our School and be part of the next wave of innovations and breakthroughs.

It’s an exciting time at the School with world-class research being conducted across an extensive range of areas with 50+ PhD students actively working with our academic staff. These include medical bionics (bionic eyes), advanced biomaterials, stem cells, biomimetic scaffolds, regenerative medicine, cancer diagnostics and computational modelling of a range of physiological systems. It also involves research into wearable and telehealth systems, including the development of smartphone apps and data analytics for managing disease and wellness.

Our teaching activities concentrate on the Master of Biomedical Engineering degree with intakes for people with both engineering and medical backgrounds. In addition to the double degree in Biomedical Engineering (Bachelor of Engineering / Master of Biomedical Engineering), our School also continues to grow in reputation. We offer innovative and high-quality educational programs that allow undergraduate students to study Biomedical Engineering at a high level. Currently, there are more than 500 students enrolled in these programs.

If you’re interested in our world-class research, explore our research and study options and take advantage of Australia’s largest and oldest Biomedical Engineering school.

A biomedical engineering team, second to none

We’re the largest and oldest Biomedical Engineering school in the Southern Hemisphere. We offer high-quality education programs and conduct, as well as translate cutting-edge research into clinical practice. From bionic devices to stem cells and cancer diagnostics, it’s an exciting time for research at the UNSW Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering.

Our vision is to provide the best research and teaching environment that is relevant to the development of applications in the human healthcare sector. We aim to improve the quality of life for Australians with life-threatening or debilitating diseases.

We offer undergraduates a concurrent five-year bachelor and master's degree — one of the key advantages of our program. These degrees provide a strong focus on Biomedical Engineering, which is complemented by one of nine accredited engineering degrees, such as Electrical, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering.

What we do

Biomedical engineers sit at the intersection of technology and human biology. We create and apply new technologies in computing, robotics and nanotechnology to revolutionise medicine and improve people’s lives.
