Undertanding and predicting firestorms

Australia’s Black Summer introduced many of us the phenomenon of the ‘pyrocumulonimbus’, otherwise known as a firestorm.

These fires are dangerous, unpredictable and so intense that they create their own thunderstorms, with strong winds and dry lightning.

Understanding these fires is and predicting extreme fires and firestorms is an integral factor in protecting lives, our communities and the environment.

Wildfire simulation

Dr Duncan Sutherland explains how we can use physics-based simulations to model how a fire spreads.

Bushfire hotspots

Honorary Professor Rick McCrae explains how we can analyse hotspot data to produce more accurate bushfire season predictions.

Urban bushfires

Dr Maryam Ghodrat explains how we can use research and modelling to better protect structures in bushfire prone areas.

Climate change and bushfires

Dr Sarah Perkins-Kirkpatrick explains how as the effects of climate change worsen, we are seeing the severity and frequency of bushfires increase.
