Q&A with Petroleum Engineering Student

"As a Research Ambassador, my goal is to showcase UNSW's groundbreaking research in carbon dioxide capture, utilisation and storage, through conferences, webinars, publications, and collaborations with industry partners. I want to highlight how our research addresses not only challenges in the minerals and energy sector, but also acute issues that society is facing."

I chose UNSW’s School of Mineral and Resources Engineering because it offered an exciting opportunity to explore cutting edge research on carbon capture and storage technologies. The idea of applying petroleum engineering knowledge to combat climate change inspired and intrigued me. UNSW’s reputation for leading-edge research in this field and their state-of-the-art facilities solidified my decision to pursue my PhD here.

The energy industry is evolving towards greater sustainability and environmental responsibility. Research in areas like CO2 geosequestration is pivotal in ensuring a cleaner future for the industry, even becoming mandatory as we work towards achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

I’ve always felt that the future of the petroleum industry lies in finding solutions to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from human activities, rather than in its ability to extract oil and gas more efficiently.

This led me to my current research, which aims to address critical issues related to carbon dioxide geosequestration in coal seams. By using advanced imaging techniques like Positron Emission Tomography (PET), I aim to enhance our understanding of fluid flow processes and mechanisms within coal seams. This ultimately contributes to more accurate simulation models and more efficient carbon capture and storage solutions.

I enjoy addressing the real-world challenge of combating climate change and decreasing the environmental impact of the minerals and energy sector. It also allows me to apply theoretical knowledge to solve practical problems, something that I find both fulfilling and essential. UNSW has provided me with invaluable research skills and access to advanced imaging technologies like PET and cutting-edge laboratory equipment.

As a Research Ambassador, my goal is to showcase UNSW's groundbreaking research in carbon dioxide capture, utilisation and storage, through conferences, webinars, publications, and collaborations with industry partners. I want to highlight how our research addresses not only challenges in the minerals and energy sector, but also acute issues that society is facing.

In my future career, I aspire to partner with key industry players to continue my research and contribute to sustainable resource management in the field. I hope to develop and trial innovative techniques that will enhance carbon capture and storage solutions, allowing future generations to have a better environmental outcome.

To future MERE students, I would advise embracing research opportunities in cutting-edge areas like carbon capture utilization and storage. As we move from a fossil fuel-based society to renewables, such technologies will demand a constant level of innovation for more efficient techniques to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. Stay curious and committed to addressing our society’s sustainability challenges, as your contributions can make a significant impact on our planet's future.Â
