Overview
The Core Systems Engineering (SE) course aims to provide attendees with a practical understanding of the concept and application of SE across a variety of industries. An understanding of the associated products, processes, tools and management practices underpinning the multidisciplinary approach of SE will also be provided to enable participants to maximise the capability realisation of a system’s full life cycle. The introductory course places systems engineering principles in the context of the other related disciplines involved in the delivery of technical projects and the system life cycle.
Course content
The Core SE Course includes many design exercises that illustrate the application of SE processes in various contexts to be ready for the systems of the future. The exercises allow the opportunity to practice, use and discuss systems engineering, focusing on the early concept definition and acquisition portion of the systems life cycle. It is also the first part of a three-day Advanced SE Course. The latter allows attendees to reinforce the material already covered and gain further knowledge for all of the stages of the system life cycle. No prior knowledge is assumed for the Core Course.Â
This course applies the latest INCOSE and  approaches and practices to describe the functions, roles, design and use of intelligent and autonomous systems, including:
- understanding the main components of contemporary commercial and military systems
- defining the system objectives from users’ needs and operational concepts
- establishing performance requirements and functionality (requirements and functional analysis)
- evolving design and pperations concepts (architecture synthesis) to select a baseline (via cost/benefit trades) through conceptual, preliminary and critical design reviews
- Validating and verifying the baseline meets requirements (users’ needs) using test and evaluation.
- Iterate the process through operational use and system support needed through the system life cycle.
Learning outcomes
Skills/competencies/knowledge that would be gained through this course:
- Masters credit: UNSW Canberra allows students who have successfully completed a minimum of 12 days of  to use those courses as credit towards .
Who should attend
This course is for practitioners who are new to commercial or Defence capability or capability integration positions and industry professionals seeking to gain a baseline understanding of engineering intelligent and autonomous systems. The content in this course can also be applied to a range of industry sectors with those wanting to operate with safety critical systems including broader Defence, other government, logistics, manufacturing, information technology, security and more. The introductory course can then be used to undertake the three-day Advanced Course for those who need to hit the ground running with future systems engineering, test and evaluation concepts, and practices that work and are not just theory.
Facilitator
Grant Moran
Grant has over thirteen years of experience in Defence both as a Weapons Electrical Engineering Officer in the Royal Australian Navy and more recently within Defence Industry. His key areas of expertise are in capability development, complex system integration and test and evaluation. Grant has worked extensively within Electronic Warfare and Guided Weapons programs, with demonstrated experience in providing authorised engineering and operational risk advice to senior decision makers across acquisition, sustainment and operational contexts. Grant holds Masters in Systems Engineering and Capability Management, and Master of Project Management.
