What advice would you give to students who are unsure about choosing the right degree for their interests and career aspirations?

I was super unsure of what degree to do coming into university. I had originally enrolled into an Advanced Science degree and only two weeks in, I swapped into an education degree! Give something a go and know that you can always change directions as time goes on.

When thinking about what I wanted in a career, I knew that working with people was important to me, so that helped steer me into teaching. Having some time and distance from the pressures of finishing high school helped me think about the future a little more wisely. 

What unexpected skills did you gain from your degree that you have taken into your current role and why has it been so valuable?

Working through difficult proofs in math helped me to learn the art of logic, which has surprisingly helped me in many different areas. Logic isn’t just for solving math problems, it’s even helped me when reading English novels, engaging with current and everything in between.

Completing my university degree during the pandemic was also the first time I had ever experienced the unknown world of online learning. I learnt how to use the novel app called ‘zoom’, I am much more of a digital native now!

What extracurricular activities, work integrated learning programs or other opportunities helped you develop personally and professionally and how did you manage to balance them with your studies?

I worked part-time at different schools alongside my studies. It was the first time I’d walked into an all-girls school…what a world! I loved the opportunity to apply my studies to the classroom, teaching Mathematics and Biblical Studies at different schools.

It is tricky to balance the competing voices, people and choices throughout university. Having clear priorities and hearing wisdom from others is very helpful. Being part of a community was super crucial in helping me make wise decisions throughout my degree. For me, that was with my church community, Campus Bible Study and friends that I made in my course.

What role have the friendships and networks you made throughout your studies at UNSW played in your personal and professional life?

Looking back at my time at UNSW, some of my fondest memories have been learning alongside friends. Having networks of teachers was super helpful throughout the degree and has continued forward to teaching now. It’s so helpful to know that others are navigating first year teaching with me!

I also have loved getting to know a range of different people throughout my degree. I particularly loved getting to know international students in my courses and got to try lots of meals for the first time Getting to know and share stories with those with different experiences and backgrounds is so enriching!
